‘‘As Çorum, We are not unfamiliar with this work’’

Çetin Başaranhıncal; Chairman of Çorum Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated in his opening speech, “Many countries and Turkey have recently been introduced to the Clustering concept. However, Çorum started Clustering in soil industry in 1960s. As Çorum, we are not unfamiliar with this work”.

Başaranhıncal added, “In Çorum, Clustering activities began in soil industry in 1960s. Also, we have been carrying out Clustering activities in egg industry for long years. Therefore, As Çorum, we are not unfamiliar with Clustering. We have big experience in this field. Today we will use the Clustering technique, which we already used for these two sectors, for the food machines sector. Machine sector is an important branch of the industry for Çorum. Machine industry constitutes nearly the half of our exports and our industrialists set up turnkey factories all around the world. In 1960s our industrialists in Çorum were Clustering without any subsidy, while today the State is trying to do it through subsidies. So, all we should do is to accept this help”.

‘‘Çorum has a sophisticated infrastructure”

Yavuz Özutku; Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Export, gave information on the “SME Networking Project”, implemented by the Ministry of Economy in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology as well.

Özutku said, “Export is very important in Turkey but it is necessary to invest in infrastructure so as to increase exports. All kinds of work are based on knowledge. Our export of 32 billion dollars in 2002 is now around 130 billion dollars. We aim to bring our annual exports up to 500 billion dollars. However, it seems very difficult to achieve this goal through capacity building and overloading. We can achieve it if we invest in R&D, innovation and knowledge. Because, there is no risk in investing in knowledge, it is the most profitable investment”.

Özutku indicated that activities were carried out in five pilot provinces. He added, “Çorum has very good infrastructure. If we can bring the firms together, there will be good outputs. During the activities a needs assessment will be carried out and then, trainings will be conducted. Thus, information deficiencies will be overcome. Foreign connections will be supported as well. Kadesh Agreement, the first known written and international agreement in the history, was signed in Çorum and this province can achieve another international success”.

After the speech of Mr. Özutku, the activities and objectives of the project were introduced by Engin Özücan; Coordinator of Çorum Clusters Info Spot. Moreover, he gave a presentation on the advantages of the project for the enterprises that manufacture food processing machines.

Hakan Zobu; SME Networking Project Expert, said, “Çorum has a good reputation in industry. The State can provide subsidies to some extent, so enterprises should primarily transform their knowledge into money in order to maintain their current situation”.

Then, views and suggestions of the participants regarding the activities to be carried out within the scope of the SME Networking Project were shared and this session was moderated by Prof. Dr. Halil Aykul, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Hitit University.

Representatives from the institutions and enterprises that took part in the workshop mentioned that Clustering activities would provide various advantages to Çorum and achievements could be obtained in many fields from strengthening infrastructures of the companies to the production in defense industry.
